31 Days to Becoming an Organized Mom: Day 10- Eat the Frog

I, reflected
Welcome back to our 31 Days to Becoming an Organized Mom series. Today I want to encourage you to eat the frog first thing in the morning.  Before you leave because you think I am disgusting let me explain.  Mark Twain said:

“Eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.”

The idea is that if you do the hardest thing on your to do list first you will have accomplished it and everything else will be much easier.  This is an idea to live by!  Do the hard things first, while you still have the energy and the time.

What frog can you eat this morning?  How about tomorrow morning?

31 Days to Becoming an Organized Mom: Day 9 Analyzing the Problems

Today I am taking time to really analyze my major clutter spots and dysfunctional places in my home.  Sometimes things just pile up until I get frustrated, clean up the mess and let the cycle repeat.  So, I am intentionally considering what I can do differently to change this burdensome cycle.

My kitchen seems to be a dumping zone for all of my kids.  Just now I found multiple pairs of shoes, plenty of school papers, games, jackets, purses, and toys all in my kitchen/breakfast nook area.  The answer to some of these problems is how consistently I {calmly & lovingly} teach my kids to handle their things. Some of the problem is just not having a very clear system for where these things go in this room.

Here is what I am doing and what I challenge you to do.  Go through each room with a notepad {or a list on your phone} and write down all of the clutter issues.  Once your done, sit down and write out potential solutions.

Mine might look something like this:

Kitchen

Shoes all over—–> an additional basket for shoes that is checked daily by the kids

Small toys on the ground—-> work on a no toys outside of the playroom and bedroom rule with the kids

Jackets on bar stools—-> new hook rack in here that has enough space for each child. Have kids check daily at the same time they collect shoes

Homework and art projects too large for files—–>make some sort of clips for the kids to each hang up their projects on the wall {dual purpose- art & storage}

Once I’m done with my list I may need a trip to the store to purchase a few new organizational items OR I may be able to re-purpose items from other parts of the house.  The great thing about taking time to analyze the problem areas you have is that you are identifying solutions to things that may be causing you additional stress every day.  Now you can proactively work toward eliminating those things.

What are some of your problem areas?  What solutions have you come up with for them?  I’d love to hear your ideas!!

31 Days to Becoming an Organized Mom: Day 8 The Voice You Listen To

If you are following along with our 31 Days to Becoming an Organized Mom Series I hope that you are encouraged to tackle what you need to get organized in your home.  I don’t know about you but I need both practical ideas on how to get organized as well as help overcoming the mental barriers that got me disorganized in the first place.  I am very much in this with you.  The only reason I am writing this series is because I NEED it. It is a working out of what I need to overcome and what I need to get done.

Today I just want to encourage you that you are not behind and you are not overwhelmed.  If you feel overwhelmed then be careful of the voice you are listening to.  There is an evil little voice that likes to scream in your ear that you are overwhelmed and that you’ll never get on top of anything.  This voice wins when it gets you to repeat what it says because you start to believe what you say and it becomes your reality.

If you are feeling overwhelmed with your life or your home, take a deep breath and listen for the voice.  If you’ve been repeating negative things then stop.  You can do this!  Start believing you can and you will. When you hear the negative then learn to quickly realize it’s negative and tell that negativity the truth. You are not overwhelmed.  There is nothing that is too hard to overcome.  Yes it takes some {a LOT} of work but you are up for it and YOU CAN do it!

How do you overcome the times you just don’t feel like doing the work?  How do you make time when there seems to be no time?

31 Days to Becoming an Organized Mom: Day 7: Don’t Forget to Rest

With all the organizing we’ve been doing don’t forget to rest.  We need breaks in our work.  Today I am taking time off to rest and be fully present with my family.  I’ll see you back here tomorrow with more organizing ideas.

31 Days to Becoming an Organized Mom: Day 6- Controlling Clutter

Are you seeing any progress on your journey of 31 Days to Becoming an Organized Mom?  I sure am! These little steps are making a big difference.  Today, I thought I’d share some of the ways that I have found to be successful in controlling clutter for my family.  With 6 kids, there are some things that really help me out and I think they may benefit you and your family as well.

Keep a Family Calendar

We have a large dry erase calendar in our Kitchen that we can change out Monthly {I purchased this one on clearance from Pottery Barn a few years back}.  My older daughters help me keep it current and we all add our events to it. This helps me to feel a little more sane on the days when we are going in 8 different directions.  One of the ways I organize it is by having a different color marker for each family member. So when my oldest has an art class we write it with her blue color and when the youngest has a doctors appointment we write it in orange.  This method works very well for us.

I do also use Google Calendars and share with my husband but I find that the calendar on the wall is worth the extra time because I am a visual person and when I see it all laid out for me every day I feel way more on top of everything.

 Baskets Everywhere

Kids seem to breed clutter. I have some clutter controllers in my home that help with the everyday messes.  I have a large basket {with a lid on it} at the bottom of my stairs which is also in my family room {This particular basket came from HomeGoods, which is one of my favorite stores ever!}.  This basket is for collecting escaped toys and items that need to be put away upstairs.  We collect items in there and once a week we clean everything out and put it all away.

We also have baskets for shoes {This one’s from Target}.  When you have six kids there are potentially 12 socks and shoes kicked off every day. We are working on teaching them to take them off and put them away right away but I have always felt like this is an uphill battle. That’s why I have a basket by the front door and near the garage door to collect shoes & socks to be put away at a certain time of day. These baskets also work well for mittens and scarves on cold days.

A Place for Everything

We have several hook racks in our home {I made this one from a board and hooks that I purchased from Michael’s}. They are great for holding towels, purses by the door, bags of items to return to the store, backpacks, etc… It’s worth the effort to teach kids to use them to keep floors clutter free.

Crazy Paper Piles No More

Kids seem to get paper from everywhere they go. We get notes from school, homework papers, activity sheets from church, coloring pages and more! Too often these papers end up in piles and I cannot find what I need when I need it. Enter the hanging files {I found this one at Target in the office supplies}. The kind I have found has exactly 6 folders and this works out to be one for each kid for me. I have it hiding in my pantry in the kitchen and this is where papers go.  This eliminates so much frustration over where to find papers when you need them. We clean it out every couple weeks to make sure we are on top of everything.

What Can I Eat?

“What can I eat?” is a famous question in my house and is usually prefaced with “I’m SO hungry!” I was getting frustrated with hearing this from 6 different kids coming home from school at different times each day. So I got a big basket and put it in the pantry and it is the “Snack Box.”  My kids know what is in it is what they are allowed to have for snacks. I have also made sure they know to only eat one serving size of whatever the snack is that they choose.

That’s it for now. Hopefully these ideas will get your organizing juices going and you can tackle some of the ways clutter builds in your home.

Tell me your tips too! I’d love to know what you do to tackle and eliminate clutter.
